Helen Arkell Auditory Test HAAT
Age range 6 to 11 years (but can be used for older students with weak basic phonological skills)
This is a useful, informal test which investigates phonological awareness and basic phonic knowledge. The sub-tests are: reading non-words, spelling non-words, letter/sound links, auditory discrimination, rhyme judgement, rhyme production, blending and segmentation. It is a criterion referenced test and provides a rough guide to expected scores for pupils aged 6-9 and 9-11 years old. It does not require any specific level of qualification to administer the test and it provides a good opportunity for close observation and noting any specific difficulties regarding phonological skills and abilities.

Extra time: To assist assessors in recording the area of speed of working/processing that different tests measure when assessing for extra time, Patoss have produced a document that covers tests that can be used in an assessment to gain evidence for extra time (excluding closed psychologist-only tests).
The document covers 172 measures that can be used as assessment evidence for extra time and the areas of speed of working they relate to. The areas of speed of working reflect those in the JCQ regulations 2021/22 (JCQ AARA 21-22, 7.5.12). see https://www.patoss-dyslexia.org
